6 Tips for a well-prepared and successful family photoshoot

When we immerse ourselves in our memories, these often include our family. It’s always a special time to look back at family photos. They are a fixed moment in time to cherish forever.

The clothes you wear for your photos are therefore primordial and well planned in advance, well-coordinated outfits will give harmony and a family spirit to your shots.

There are many aspects to consider when choosing your clothing. Coordinating your outfits is important, but doesn’t have to be a headache! You only have to select a few key colors and textures to create a coherent look and close-knit family feel.

Here are some tips to prepare for your professional family photoshoot in Amsterdam!

1 – Prepare in advance.

The earlier you plan your outfits, the less stress you will have, it is also wise to have several options to choose from, so everyone is happy, particularly when you have children or teenagers to dress.

2 – Choose comfortable and practical clothes.

It is recommended to wear something that is comfortable and that reflects everyone’s personality, more particularly when choosing the outfits for small children. If your kids are not comfortable, it may be a painful photo session!

3 – Coordinate but do not match colors

You can reach a cohesive look without everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Choose colors that look nice together, but don’t fall into the trap that you all need to be wearing the exact same sweater. Your photos will be far more interesting with some variation!

Determine a color scheme; by choosing tones that complement each other, the images will indeed have a more harmonious and natural look.

To do so, you can select two main colors and then add softer tones to accentuate and complete your color palette. Each family member can then choose cloth items that include these color tones.

Also avoid too vivid/flashy colors as well as entirely white clothes items, as they often do not give a nice render.

Here is a grid that can help you mix and match colors:

4 – Pick out accessories to add style and texture to your pictures.

Adding accessories to your individual outfits, like a scarf, a belt or a hat, or even matching socks, for example, will bring variety to your shots but also strengthen the united and harmonious aspect of the images.

For example, if a person is wearing a blue and white tartan shirt, adding a scarf with the same pattern to another family member’s outfit will create a more cohesive feeling.

5 – Avoid busy and distracting patterns and large logos.

Clothes with disparate patterns or large logos can lead to inconsistent results and be quite disturbing. Heavy prints and abstract patterns can overpower your pictures. Avoid patterns that clash.

You can, of course, however, choose one pattern element. In this case, again, please prefer soft tones, and make sure the element is not too present, not everywhere on all the clothes items of each family member but some hints here and there. For example, blue flower prints on mum’s dress, as well as on your daughter’s scarf, a blue shirt for dad, and a blue cap for your toddler.

6 – Take the session location into consideration.

Another helpful point to consider when choosing your outfits is the location of your photoshoot.

Will it be in a park with a lot of shades of green, in the old city center of Amsterdam with a lot of brown and orange tones, in an urban modern neighborhood with a lot of vibrant graffiti, on the beach where there are plenty of neutral tones?

Pick a color scheme that will complement the background and not be discordant with the surrounding colors, but be careful not to fade in (avoid beige or ivory color tones when shooting on the beach, preferably choose for example marine blue with some white)

Once you have agreed on a color palette and possible patterns following the above tips, and each family member has been able to choose some clothing items, you can lay each family member’s outfit together to see how it actually looks together and determine if something is not right or something is missing!

But most importantly, already have some fun styling your outfit and let your personality shine!
